Why Attention to Personal Well-Being Trains You for Success in Life
Summer is upon us! That means long nights, vacations, and many moments of relaxation. But how do we juggle the leisure of the season with work, kids, and everyone’s hectic schedules? One way to handle it all is through keeping up with your personal well-being and goals using S.M.A.R.T. tactics and intentional well-being practices.
Personal Well-Being Defined
Well-being is a holistic system of physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual fitness. You cannot ignore any component; they are interdependent. For example, not only can you not optimize mental fitness without physical fitness; you cannot optimize physical fitness without mental fitness. In the same way that those aspects are codependent, your emotional and spiritual fitness benefit each other as well. When all four of these components work together they can positively benefit your life.
One way Smart Standing Solutions encourages healthy practices to improve your personal well-being is through using S.M.A.R.T.: a goal-setting acronym.
S.M.A.R.T. stands for these qualities:
Specific: Is your goal simple enough to easily define?
Measurable: Can you track and be motivated by a specific result?
Achievable: Is your goal attainable?
Relevant: Is this goal being set at the right time for your environment or needs?
Time: Does your goal have a deadline or is it time sensitive?
Goal setting has numerous benefits, and we found that this approach is realistic and fun to do! When you begin setting S.M.A.R.T. goals, you will find that you will stay more mindful of what you aim to accomplish.
S.M.A.R.T. goal setting tactics extend to just about any field of life — fitness, home, work, and school. This sense of having realistic ideas, and following through with them, is a crucial aspect of developing healthy habits. These goals can extend into any of the eight measures of well-being: Spiritual, physical, emotional/mental, environmental, financial, occupational, social, and intellectual.
To enhance your well-being, something you could do is choose three of the measures listed above and focus on them for one month. Try and create S.M.A.R.T. goals for each measure you choose. This will make your goals more attainable so you can start to take a holistic approach to your health.
Turning Well-Being Into Success
Improving your well-being can bring you more success in life. Because well-being is multi-faceted, you can use it to improve your mental, spiritual, and physical health. In an article by Forbes magazine, a suggestion is made that we should focus on our EQ (Emotional Intelligence), MQ (Moral Intelligence), and BQ (Body Intelligence). Your EQ refers to how aware you are of your own feelings, and how you deal with them to address self-motivation and relationship building. Your MQ is how you treat those around you, and your BQ is how in-tune you are with your body. Examples of healthy BQ could be feeding yourself nutritious food at work and home, getting enough sleep, or taking an evening walk to wind down. You don’t want to ignore any of these as a sedentary lifestyle can negatively affect anyone’s life. Living a sedentary lifestyle means that you are sitting stationary for most of your day. The best way to change this is to incorporate movement through standing during the day and track how much you are moving. All three of these contribute to your well-being: a healthy body, brain, and mindset.
Next time you find yourself in a rut, creatively or mentally, try and tune into your state of well-being. Maybe you need to create some new S.M.A.R.T. goals for the month or take a quick movement break to refresh your body and mind. This summer try these goal-setting tactics along with intentional well-being practices. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to achieve your set goals!
